The back board has an inlaid brown toad looking up at similar tree. The spine is tooled with a few gilt willow leaves and title. With a brown paper gilt tooled toad as front doublure and a black paper gilt tooled mole as back doublure. Gilt edges. In a green folding box which has original cloth spine and front board laid down inside. A most impressive piece of work in very fine condition.

55. Miniature Chained Bible & Lectern. Produced by Oxford U. P. in 1911, and measuring 2” x 1½”, the Bible has a fake renaissance binding and is fixed by a chain to a 5½” high oak lectern. The binding is a little scuffed on front joint and bottom of spine. The inner hinge is slightly weak and first few pages lightly soiled at edges, and the front board gapes open a little because of the magnifying glass in pocket. Lectern fine.

56. The Book Of Common Prayer. Produced by Cambridge U.P. c. 1910. Diamond 128 mo (2” x 1½”) in a black morocco binding with yapp edges and carrying straps, one other & 2 Victorian Miniature Books of Common Prayer with hallmarked silver fronts.

57. A display box containing 27 small & miniature Prayer Books, classics and poetry, also an Illustrated Bible held in a 2½” high brass figure of Shakespeare.

Bound in deep crimson velvet, brass bound edges and clasp (with initials L.T. inside) with gold, possibly 15 carat, shield shaped centrepiece inscribed Holy Bible. Velvet and silk doublures and silk end papers. Lacks blank leaf after free end paper, not affecting appearance. Superb gilt edges. 4¾” x 3”. In slightly worn leather box. A magnificent Bible in very fine condition. Together with a matching pair in purple velvet – Common Prayer and Proper Lessons, 1841. Both have tiny splits to velvet edge of spines

60. Church Services. 1854, London: Eyre & Spottiswoode. 5” x 3”. Cream morocco spine with gilt ruled lines, the boards being bound with silver on copper, with ornate acanthus leaf corner pieces and clasp. The gauffred edges are decorated with gilt. A superb copy in a defective silk-lined box.

61. A Kempis, Thomas. A Kempis (of the Imitation Of Christ). 1907, The Royal Library. Foolscap 8vo. Bound by Zaehnsdorf in full crimson morocco with a central gilt arabesque in a gilt quartered box with small green inlays on both boards. Gilt ruled compartments on spine. Top edge gilt. With a very feint 2” mark on front and a minute scuff on back, o/w excellent copy.

62. Borrow, George. Lavengro. 1914 reprint. Illustrated by E.J. Sullivan. Cr8vo. A 1920s binding (by Riviere) in full dark brown polished calf, the front board having raised scene depicting a Gentleman Of The Road sitting on a milestone, dyed in tans, dark green and red with blind stamped title. The back board has similar with cauldron on camp fire with flames. The spine has a heavy dyed Art Nouveau design and gilt lettering with 4 very tiny scuffs and very feint scratches. Gilt edges. A wonderful binding. Together with: Browne, Sir Thomas. Religio Medici. 1920 reprint, Golden Treasury Series. Foolscap 8vo. Binding signed by Riviere and similar to above – sailing ship on heavy seas dyed in browns and tan. Back board has torch with flame and this is also on spine. The front joint along spine is beginning to weaken slightly and there are 3 tiny scuffs and feint scratches.

Gilt edges. ¼” scuff on side of spine. Binding signed WHS (Douglas Cockerell’s work is sometimes hidden in the trade name of W.H.Smith on bindings). A fine handsome copy.

Rebound approx. 35 years ago in full olive green morocco with gilt ruled lines, tiny motifs and star on front board. Large corner cut from first blank leaf after end papers. Fine copy.

Bound approximately 35 years ago by Graham Bloodworth of Leicester, City & Guilds Silver Medallist, in full scarlet morocco with 600 gilt acorns on spines and front and back boards. The dentelles are also decorated with 160 acorns. The first blank leaves after end papers in both volumes have large corners cut off o/w a magnificent pair in a black, part leather slip case. A fine copy.

70. Shaw, Henry. Dresses And Decorations Of The Middle Ages. 2 volumes, 1st edition, 1843, London: William Pickering, Chiswick. With many hand coloured copper plates, highly finished and heightened in gold and wood cuts printed in up to 4 colours. Royal 4to. Bound in half crimson morocco, spine with rich gilt compartments and 2 labels. Marbled boards and gilt top. The bindings are rather scuffed in places and the labels dry. Paintings, miniatures, stained glass, furnishings, glasses, chests, vestments, gold cups, jewellery etc. “It has considerable claim to be called the most handsome book produced in the whole of the nineteenth century.” – Ruari McLean.
